Chris McCandless Tribute

Back

A tribute to Chris McCandless, aka Alexander Supertramp. I have disable comments, because there are too many negative comments towards Chris and towards other posters. I hope you understand this. ATTENTION: I would like to note that in the credits it says that Eddie Vedder wrote "Society" but in reality it was written by Jerry Hannan. Please excuse this error.

I found this book accidentally (seemingly so, but I was ready for it) and finished it today. It shed a light on my own urges. I wish there was a way I could tell Chris McCandless that his life and death are not meaningless, but I know he already knows.

people should not be influenced by what he did, seeing as he did it for himself. it was a deeply personal voyage, and a choice made on his own. if you are lost in life, you must find a way out yourself, and if that way happens to be that of chris mccandless' so be it. though not safe, nor conventionally intelligent, what he did was absolutely amazing.

Was Chris McCandless a genius? No. What was he? A quality person, something the world needs more of.

nononono. his life in last years in the wild was so much better than the city life. he didnt want to take items. and thats good. a thousand years ago people didnt have items, but they lived. they didnt have cars, icecream and lcd monitor, but they lived, and they had a great life. society is sick.

I think he was kinda of crazy and he just wanted to commit suicide that's all!!! He didn't care for anything else.....With his death, we could learn something don't go to the wild without the neccesary items & knowledge on how to survive there, unless you want to die like McCandless.. I feel sorry for his death!!:(

it's clear that he was not trying to kill himself. He tried to go back to civilization after 2 months in the wild, but the Tekanika river had grown too strong with melting snow and he was forced to stay. He died of eating mold off of perfectly edible food. He knew what he was doing and pulled it off really well for 4 months.

Amidst the whole fire thing, have any of you thought that maybe McCandless was fine with dying? Obviously he didn't set out to die, but when death present itself to him, he seemed fine with that. He seems, like his sister said, like a type of guy that wouldn't burn down a forest to save his own life.

That is so true, and so many people miss this fact. We glorify life and get scared shitless of death, but after all, we don't know what -if anything- comes after death. Maybe it is a good thing. For me, death is the point where you reach eternal peace. It doesn't mean I want to die now, but I don't see why I should try to prolong my life unnecessarily. It is more important to live fully, live meaningfully, live with dignity, and follow your own path to your truth, which is what McCandless did.

I think maybe you missed the point. We don't need to know your name, unless you want the fame. In which case, you have missed the point. If you are to do it then do it, don't tell the world your story before it happens, that's backwards. As Chris said, "everything called by it's right name."
