You should know that the stuntman who did the fall from the tower was Louie Elias, one of the greatest. Since the show commenced each episode with this stunt, it provided him with a steady bit of income. You'll note that he darn near missed landing on that buried mattress.

If you look closely at frame :51, you can see how the ground has a square that most likely is a cushion to break the stunt man's fall.
