The purpose of the sand is that they can measure from the indent you make in the sand closest to the line you jump from. If your butt goes down behind your feet, they measure from your butt and that stinks, but its the way they can keep it fair.

The thing is Carl Lewis also set world records in the 100 m, 4 x 100 m and 4 x 200 m relays and set the world record for indoor long jump. Quoted from Wiki.... Take that Mike Powell.
