Mounted Cougar Stolen From Hickman Mills

Back

Some bandits went to a lot of trouble to steal a mounted cougar mascot from Hickman Mills High School. The theft was discovered Monday. "We're missing one of our favorite residents here, the cougar," Principal Bill Scully told KMBC's Dan Weinbaum. The cougar, which was behind a glass door in a school trophy case, had been mounted and stuffed by students in 1979, when taxidermy was still taught in school. "I remember when they brought it in and put it up in the office, everyone was real proud of it," said Lisa Jennings, Hickman Mills class of 1981. "Someone went to great lengths to manage to get this mount out of our building," security director John McEntee said. Here's what the school thinks happened: On Friday night, the school was open for a Cub Scout function. Surveillance cameras show the thieves walking backward, keeping their backs to the security cameras. One of them sprays the lens to block the view, and then the thieves jimmy open the glass case and make off with the mounted cougar. Another camera captured the thieves carrying the big cat through the gym. "It's a felony. They unlawfully entered our building after hours to take this," McEntee said. "If anyone see that cougar -- we would appreciate if you'd pick him up and bring him back here," Scully said. There is a $2,000 reward for information leading to the return of the cougar. Anyone with information in the case can call the Crime Stoppers TIPS hot line at 816-474-TIPS.
