QUENTIN CRISP - The First Documentary PART ONE (1970)
BackAfter the publication of his book, The Naked Civil Servant, in 1968 QUENTIN CRISP was approached by documentary maker Denis Mitchell to be the subject of a short film in which he was to talk about his life, voice his opinions and sit around in his London bedsit filing his nails - which he did, brilliantly. This 1970 broadcast brought enough attention to Crisp and his book that he soon entered talks about a dramatisation. In 1975 THE NAKED CIVIL SERVANT was broadcast on British and American television - and made both actor John Hurt and Crisp himself into stars. By 1981 Quentin was living in Manhattan - the world famous 'Englishman In New York.' Watching this very first documentary portrait of Crisp, it's incredible to think where Life would take him in his seventies and eighties. (Part ONE of Three)

Sting wrote 'An Englishman in Bew York' about Crisp, which is the title of the new film about Quentin Crisp starring John Hurt. As for his story, far too much to go into here! Check out his wikipedia page for a potted history.

Is there a NEW film about Quentin - with John Hurt!!?? - a kind of Naked Civil servant II? - great, but scary, a big risk Hurt would take

Yes, the sequel to The Naked Civil Servent - entitled 'An Englishman in New York' - has just finished filming in New York. Check out the 'Crisperanto' website (just google it) for full filming details, and photos of John Hurt back in the character as Quentin after more than 30 years!!
It's looking like an excellent production, but I agree it's a big risk. I wonder if the magic of the first film can be recreated? It's scheduled for a British TV premiere in late 2008/early 2009.
