It's from a short essay (?) of the same name, "Baptism of Solitude." The whole essay is about a dozen pages long. The very beginning and end are excerpted here in the video.
To tonyahurley, thanks for posting! I've been looking for this for several years since I first happened to catch it on tv.

Thanks! I searched on Amazon. It's in his "Their Heads Are Green and Their Hands Are Blue" collection. I remember being in a desert in Egypt and facing pretty much what PB describes. Seeing as I'm a big Sheltering Sky fan I figure everything he writes is now gold:)
ps this video is indeed beautiful; i love the way it makes the abstract concrete without losing and of its poetry

XFAKTOR212,:
Two words: anger management.
Mr. Bowles is talking about transcendence.
By the way the audio is the sound part, you know, the spoken word and the background sound/music. Magic. Sorry to sound a bit condescending but . . . . nevermind.
It's all OK. I'm good with you holding your position.

XFACTOR212,
I may very well be fucking crazy. At times I suspect that is true. I still don't like the video in this context. It is creative and at times even impressive. It just doesn't work for me in this situation. I really like the audio as is. Maybe we can agree to disagree. Or . . .? what?

No, I don't think so.
You keep referring to the "audio." What the hell do you mean?
The prose or backing track?
If you dig the prose, which is, ya know, the whole reason we're here, then you might notice that the visuals are impeccable illustrations of the "audio."
You really ought to ashamed of yourself.
Do you think this shit is a game?!?!?!

The audio is amazing. The video is distracting and disturbing and mostly is a negative for me while listening. I heard this track best on a local public radio station. It stopped time in my afternoon.

You must be fucking crazy.
This visuals in this piece are as stunning as the master's prose.
For a Paul Bowles fan, it doesn't get much better than this.
Maybe you should watch it again.
