Well, it can open jars, so it's already smarter than some of the people in my family...

To put it bluntly, this little stunt is incredibly trivial for an octopus. What people don't realize is that humans actually have a harder time opening jars than octopuses do, since we lack suction cups and only have 2 arms. There is an invertebrate species, A. Finolus, located at the Pantolamo lab in Venezuela that has 16 arms and can open any jar you throw at it in under 10 seconds. While this all sounds impressive, it's just not hard when your anatomy provides you a jar-opening advantage.

I don't think people are too suprised at how easy or hard it is for them, it's that they realize the potential for what may lie inside. There is a few amount of animals that are able to comprehend that kind of logic.

Most people who work with animals realize how smart many of them are. They talk like this on TV to pander to the TV audiences. I hear that slaughtering swine is a particularly tough job because the pigs are so smart and (I hear) so keenly aware of their fate. Many men who do this quickly end up seeking other kinds of work. I haven't heard anybody say the same things about slaughtering turkeys, however, as they tend to be profoundly stupid birds.

I can open a bottle in 1 second... I think that qualifies as me having an easier time opening the bottle than an octopus.
