The head of Miss America at the time said Vanessa would not be asked to give back the scholarship money she earned nor the crown. After all, she served practically 11 months before the scandal designed to bring down the first black Miss America. She resigned, she was not dethroned so why would you take anything back.

My mom was the exec director of a local pagaent to Miss America the year Vanessa won, so I basically grew up in the Miss America system. I, myself, became involved in the Miss America Organization on the local level and have been a certified judge for the MAO for the past 17 years, so I have some knowledge on this topic. There have only been 2 years when EVERYBODY (pageant officials, chaperones, judges & spectators) knew who was going to win as soon as they set foot in Atlantic City....

Vanessa Williams and Heather Whitestone. Vanessa became the first black Miss America and Heather became the first Miss America w/ a disability. I know a lot of you who are participating in this discussion are going to be quick to jump at the obvious, pressure to finally pick a black winner and pressure to choose the woman w/ a disability. But let me say this, Vanessa was getting attention as the front runner months before the contestants got to Atlantic City. As did Miss Whitestone.

I couldn't agree w/ you more MA19Never. Vanessa posed for those pictures when she was 18 and never signed a release for publication. She was told they were to be used for promotion only. She was a victim of bad judgement and an unscrupulous photographer. Those pictures cost her more than her title and humility, she had to forfeit the $25,000 scholarship and all money from the sponsors that Miss America represents during her year. It was a lot more than just the crown & the sash.

25 years ago the Miss America Organization threw Vanessa Williams under the bus and did not give a damn because she was black. Today, every major television network has thrown the Miss America Pageant under the bus because they all no longer give a damn about them. Funny what goes around comes around. Karma is a bitch!!!

Lencola Sullivan, Miss Arkansas, was in the top five the very next year, 1981. She was the fourth runner up - at that time, the highest finish for a black woman at the Miss America pageant. She is still as gorgeous as she was then!
