I don't think Joan Benoit had an easy gold medal in this race. This was the best women's marathon ever. Joanie was world record holder, 2nd place Grete Waitz was world champion, 3rd place Rosa Mota was European Champion and future world and Olympic champion. 4th Ingrid Kristiansen broke the WR in 1985.

Because Soviet Union and other countries did not participate in 1984 olympics was an easy way for the US to win gold medals in some hard events that they don't dominate like the marathon...
