Labs Septic

Back

A classical question in algebraic geometry is how many cone-singularities a surface of a given degree can have. For degree 7 surfaces this problem is still unsolved. The movie shows part of a septic found by Oliver Labs in 2006. It has 99 cone-singularities (not all can be seen in this movie). By works of Chmutov, Breske, Labs and van Straten it is known that no more than 104 cone-singularities are possible. This movie was made using surfex. Have been watching, and will be watching. Love these videos, thank you for continuing to make them. Aloha!

These cone singularites remind me awfully of carnival hats... Maybe it's some bizarre subconcious drive of ours to make carnival hats that mirror cone singularities... Who knows? x3 Great stuff, I watched through all your videos. Thanks a lot for uploading them and the (for me way too hard) explanations on the side. i think I liked the Klein bottle best, it's fascinating. Or possibly the "Compactness and Stereographic Projection", but that mostly because of the well-made video.
