Augie's last dance

Back

**ATTENTION HAMSTER OWNERS: Take care of your pet!! Clean their cage at least once a week, and play with them too!! Augie died of wet tail, a very common disease in hamsters, because of cages not being cleaned often enough. It is so sad to watch your hamster die in such pain. Please don't let this happen to yours! If you think your hamster has wet tail (if he/she starts sleeping more than normal, becomes irritable or starts acting strange), go to your local pet store IMMEDIATELY and get some wet tail medicine. It only costs a few dollars, and it might save your hamster's life. We were too late.. :( --- Bianca's and my hamster, Augie, died today (coincidentally our 2 year anniversary). This is footage from when we were away this weekend - we took Augie with us so we could give her her medicine and look after her... She made it all the way home with us, but couldn't make it up her tube to her loved "bedroom", where she always slept. She tried for a week to get up there, but we couldn't bring her up because we knew she would have trouble getting back down. When we got home, she looked as if she were in agonizing pain. She went from happy hamster, to sleepy lethargic hamster, to irritable and almost psychotic... at her last minutes, I picked her up and placed her in her bedroom, and closed the lid - a vibrant green-blue tinted plastic hinged door. She gazed up, as if remembering the colors and comfort of her habitat...and layed down to die, not 2 minutes later. RIP Augie. We are proud to have had you, play with you, and call you our pet for so long. We are so happy you were able to go where you wanted to be to rest. P.S. It was very interesting to see Augie hold on for so long, even though she was in so much pain...and at the moment she was placed in her bedroom, where she spent so much of her life, where she was the most comfortable and safe...she let go, as if she had to get back there first, so she could die.

:( I think my gerbil has wet tail syndrome. She's REALLY bloated, recently got vicious with me, breathes REALLY heavily and of course her bottom area is kinda wet. She's passing on soon... right? Do you know about how long it lasts?

I have had loads of hamsters in the past. Not one of them got this wet tail. Now I have one for my daughter. I have thoroughly cleansed the cage today, all parts and treated with mite spay (as he appears to be loosing some fur). I also tried t clean him up a bit, with some moist cotton wool and treated him with the mite repellent. I must go check the shavings! I never knew about that until now. The pet shop certainly did not advice me of this when I purchased him.
