Maybe I'm a prude, but I could honestly live without that part. It seems like something that was just put there for the sake of being avant guarde. It really didn't have much to do with the rest of the plot. The choreography is stunning. I've heard that the purpose of the abrupt movements is to show pictures of the poem, rather than to tell a story. It's almost supposed to be more of a tableau than a dance... LOVE how he did that :-) And the set/costumes were stunning :-)

Anyone know why they were trying to simulate Greek art so much in this? Did the choreographer have a penchant for the mythology? Did Malarme's poem refer to it at all? It just seems kinda random for the time periods in which the poem was written, the song was composed, and the dance choreographed.

Isadora Duncan, an American Modern Dance pioneer, was highly influential in the Russian Dance world during the period when Faun was choreographed(1912.She ushered in a new era in dance and is considered the Mother of Russian Dance.(Woodrow Wilson Center).She lived, performed (Russian debut 1904)& started a school there. Her speech "The Dance of the Future" (1903)reflected her belief in movement;that the dance of the future would be similar to the dance of the ancient Greeks, natural and free.

I would love to read your thesis. If you go to the Raritan Valley Community College website and find dance under Visual & Performing Arts, I am the fulltime dance professor (l. fois) and my contact info is available. Good luck with your MFA, I know how much work is involved in that degree, having finished mine in the 80's!
