It was a test. He gave into his fear and aggression, so he became like Vader, hence his face behind the mask, and his "failure at the cave".

I think the cave represents Luke fear and unconsciousness... What's in there? Only what you take with you. Luke sees the vision of himself behind the mask. His father is bloodrelated.
