I don't think Deb's wrong... as a matter of fact in mystic, sufi and baul traditions(which are influenced by each other to a certain extent and very tolerant of each other) one's lover or spouse is often a metaphor for the ultimate one - Love in mystic terms is love of the highest nature - for the creator, often referred to as the lover/spouse.

Actually, bauls are both Hindus and Muslims, and songs can tilt in either direction, completely pantheistic or monotheistic. However, both types give tremendous emphasis on the preciousness of the human soul, celebrate love for God. At times, its the uncertainty and vulnerability that make it so human.

Baul Song has been a class of itself where singers clad in Safron dress ,as they are hindu monqs they wear only Safron clothes of Yogis sings religious LOVE songs.

Esliramor baul songs are songs of a community , a kind of hindu monq communities. Founded by a monq in 1750 in bengal ,their profession was to sing and beg in bands.
