Pierre Jaquet-Droz's automaton built between 1768 and 1774. It was not a computer, but was able to write custom lines of text up to 40 characters long. I cannot understand the commentary, but watching it at work is truly fascinating. (c)TIL Productions - Director : Philippe Sayous More videos on : www.automates-anciens.com

All that made without any motors... just powered by springs. The crazy (and also sad) thing is if that one day one of those automatons is broken, we surely won't be able to fix it for the simple reason that none can understand it. It's more than an engine it's really art, when you think that this little boy wrote for the king and still do at the age of the spacial conquest...

Not true. It certainly is a complex machine, but it's child's play compared to many modern machines that are built and maintained. There are people who repair and maintain these automatons, so don't worry. There's one particular automaton (not one of these on YouTube) that was found in an attic. It had been through a fire and no longer worked. Without understanding exactly what it was meant to write, apparently, someone repaired it and read the message it wrote, which told who had made it.

That's a pretty interesting history lesson.

Although I love the sound, I like watching this with the audio muted.
