in that case, it could be several generation losses. basically, a dub of a dub of a dub...and so on. analog video experiences this, digital video doesnt (for the most part). looking at it again, i suspect he used a film projector, didnt focus it properly, and then shot the out of focus projection with a digital camera. i suspect this over the generation loss, due to the good audio quality. the audio would have suffered in the same manner.
