Poor Whites - South Africa

June 2006 Since the end of apartheid, thousands of white South Africans have been forced into poverty. They blame the government's positive discrimination policies, which favour black employees. Twelve years ago, Afrikaners like Betsie Dreyer lived a privileged and cocooned life. Now, many are dependent on charity handouts. "We are fighting all the time to survive." The government is determined to see the workforce appropriately reflect the population. It gives black people priority in employment, sets 'black quotas' for businesses and favours companies owned by black people. But critics accuse the government of neglecting its responsibility to white citizens. As union rep Kallie Kriel states: "It's ironic that a government that fought racial laws is now doing exactly the same thing."

how would you like it if you where born as a white south african and apartheid ended when you where 16? you couldnt get a job. How would you feel?

My parents love black people , but they were still stopped from having the best jobs rather then white people.

before all those people who no knowlege of apartheid and the history of south africa talk... apartheid doesnt mean 'whites are in control , lets kill all the black people and non-whites so we may become supreme rulers of africa'. It actualy means 'segregation', much like in america. Shouldnt americans be punished? and oevermoerkavann, how can you say something so selfish. Most of these people we'rent part of apartheid. They were just coincidenlty born and lived in south africa at the time.

These comments show how blacks really think! Racism is terrible when whites do it but if when blacks do it we are getting what we deserve. I think we need to re-think out decision to allow blacks to have a say in the running of our governments.

I'm white (Swedish) but i think they're getting what they deserve , they were evil , that's what evil people deserve , i'm proud that my country fought against apartheid.

I am abhored by the comments here. Of course, in shifting governement power to be "more equal" whites are going to lose their positions of power. They were happy to be the ruling class but now do not like to be ruled. Well,,, if they had a problem with such a system they should have tried to stop it when it was they who were in the positions of power. Before whites many nations were the educated and advanced. Whites borrowed and expanded. Answer= have Mercy unto others regardless of who they are
