Mr. Big - Green-Tinted Sixties Mind (Live) - Kotzen version

Back

In case you didn't know, Mr. Big had two different guitar players in their roster; first was super-shredder Paul Gilbert (formerly of Racer X). Paul left Mr. big in 1999 and was later on replaced by former Poison axeman, Richie Kotzen. Both guitarists are monster players, but their techniques are very different from each other. Guitar geeks, notice how Richie plays the intro to Mr. Big's classic, GREEN-TINTED SIXTIES MIND. Taken from a Japan TV performance...

tapped version is better, sounds smoother... also, you cant play poodle rock on a Tele, not pointy enough!

It's not about what version is better... they are the same notes but different tones because Paul left some opened strings and the slides were with the right hand... and Kotzen did not use the opened strings and the slides were with the left hand. I played them both and they are easy in the two ways... of course you've got to practice A LOT! but once you've got it, it's so easy! I can't compare them because both of them, Paul and Richie, are my favorite guitarists...

There is no Mr.Big without Paul Gilbert. Kotzen is cool but I like only Mr.Big with Paul Gilbert. And why doesn't Kotzen play the intro like Paul?? Tapping intro is nice!!

True but sometimes tapping is used for performance Paul I guessed wanted to make the original song complex but it really isnt necesary.

I prefer Paul Gilbert's version better because of all the cool tapping he does in the intro, and also he sounds better than Kotzen.

I agree but reconsider the type of guitars their using and the effects being used. But yeah the tapping sounds better.

Aside from the guitar playing and overall execution, I thought that the vocal harmonies were pretty good. Aww well, Richie is a very, very competent musician. I once wrote to him via his website to ask him to come to NZ but no.....

I probably going to get a lot of angry replies, but I actually prefer this version. Not that it is particularly better than the PG version, but Kotzen's vocals really add to it.

I always thought PG's vocals were better.
