March 2005 The President of Taiwan's stubborn push for independence has made him China's Public Enemy Number One. But how likely are these tensions to escalate into a military conflict? "The world cannot sit by idly to see an undemocratic China remove the freedom, democracy and rights of Taiwan's citizens," laments President Chen Shui-Bian. But despite his best efforts, Taiwan's international support is dwindling. Only 25 countries still have diplomatic ties with it. Everyone else recognises mainland China. And since Chen came to power, China has stepped up its rhetoric, making it clear it will attack if it feels Taiwan is moving towards a formal declaration of independence. "As everyone knows, Taiwan is an inseparable part of the Chinese territory," states one Chinese commander. "The task of our military is to defend the motherland and to ensure its territorial integrity." President Chen's problems are further compounded by the deep political divides in Taiwan. Only half the country considers him their legitimate leader. The others believe he is a crook who staged a mysterious shooting the day before the elections, when he was trailing badly, to boost his support. And much as the Taiwanese tend to see themselves as a sovereign country, few want to go to war over it. After all, as one woman says, "Mainland China is so big and we are so small."

WHY IS IT THAT SO MANY CHINESE COME TO ENGLAND IF THEIR COUNTRY IS SO GREAT? Fake passports, fake age, fake driving licenses, fake exam certificates. Stay in China if its so good and indulge in all your counterfeiting..dont bring it to England!!! We will be fine without your takaways. 1mill a yr entering Taiwan, 4 mill Tibet. We never even hear the true voice of China..those MILLIONS of poor people that have no access to the internet DO NOT HAVE A VOICE.

Chinese cannot stand the truth..that Chinese are vile, power thirsty, greedy bandits. CCP wouldnt even exist without Russian funding. Chinese are lowest of the low. NO MORALS! Creating a policy last year that allows them to have the final decision as to who will be the next Tibettan lama? SICK. TAIWAN SHOULD NOT NEED TO EXPLAIN ITS INDEPENDENCE..LEAST OF ALL TO PATHETIC CHINA. china should be part of liberal democratic Taiwan to rid China of the repressive dictatorshipthat exists.

Taiwan is not a part of China. In 1949, ROC moved to Taiwan, therefore, PRC has no control of Taiwan. #2, Taiwan fulfills all 8 internationally recognized criteria for a country. #3, the Taiwan Relations Act states that the entity "Taiwan" should unofficially be considered a government, country etc. #4 China has not collect Taxes or controlled Taiwan's government

Communism and its 'classless society' was an excuse for Mao to loot from the rich using his hijacked Red Army. The shame of the Chinese is that they are true bandits ruled by bandits. China is entering capitalism only since the bandits gained what the rich once jad..reversal of riches. If I was Chinese I would be scared of losing face too. Taiwan is what China could have been...
