My take on the reality question

Back

Reality as a cultural construct. Is there an objective reality? is it all subjective? I try to answer my own question on whether YouTube produces reality...and FAIL to watch the time. my bad. I am part of a team of researchers doing an ethnography of YouTube culture for a class at Kansas State University taught by Dr. Michael Wesch (mwesch). We are creating a video documentary of YouTube that will be posted to YouTube at the conclusion of our research. We will also be writing papers and giving conference presentations on this research. To see our work in progress, visit our blog at http://mediatedcultures.net/ksudigg. If you have any questions or concerns you may contact Dr. Michael Wesch at mike.wesch@gmail.com or Dr. Rick Scheidt, Chair, Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects, 203 Fairchild Hall, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS 66506, (785) 532-3224.

you'd probably enjoy reading ken wilber. he has a 'spiritual'/zen-buddhist approach, but his take on reality is interesting. check out his 'quadrants' theory on wikipedia. i started out with his 'a brief history of everything' and went on from there. he's seemingly read just about every substantive work on philosophy, psychology, anthropology, and who knows what else out there and is quite a thoughtful synthesizer.

There IS an objective reality. The fact that we are communicating is testament to that. We can never understand the nature of that objective reality objectively. I just watched a pair of videos that explain this quite succinctly. watch?v=I8O9uhNq3CA watch?v=DI5w5iOi9Ck&feature=related

Although I do believe that it is most likely that there is an objective reality, I believe it is impossible for anyone to know what that objective reality is due to our perception being subjective, and therefore, flawed. Therefore, because we are not perfect beings, we each live life and see and experience reality subjectively, and no one can truthfully define reality as it is (or might be) in its truly objective form.

(Since I apparently mis-posted my response, the above comment was made in reply to civisromae's response.)

Oh yeah... What is 'Reality' reality is what happens nothing more and nothing less. We are PART of the happening. Not separate from it, but part of it. EVERYTHING is connected. Some things directly(meaning obviously to our perception) and some things tenuously(not directly observable). But ALL things are part of the same 'energy' (not new age ;) )
