This was directed at IBM who was the 900 lbs gorilla in personal and business computers back then. IBM was the computer god and it dictated the computer arena -- bland but functional, hence the use of the Orwellian motif. Apple was going to add excitement and innovation to personal computer. But it turned out to be Microsoft which destroyed IBM's personal computer dominance. Sounds famliliar, now Microsfot is the 900 lb gorilla -- bland but functional. =P
