Music dogmatism is risen from its ashes every now and then, by people who, for reasons I don't understand, feel an urge to categorize and pigeonhole music. Whether they tell you not to play Bach with pedal, that stoner metal can't survive outside of the scene, that Schubert MUST be played lyrically ala his art songs, or that miles davis is no way akin to Anoushka Shanker, they box music in Imo this music isn't of Davis' Calibur, to hell with you for condemning Shankar's honest attempt at fusion

whoa, i was just reading through comments, and someone compared anoushka shankar to miles davis? are you serious? if you are in any way well versed in indian classical music and western forms of music, you'd be able to tell that this is a pathetic, consumerist excuse for genuine fusion music, music that effectively brings together the two idioms

Bullshit. You're just hating. Anoushka Shankar knows more about music than you or I could hope to learn in a dozen lifetimes, bet that.

lets not get ahead of ourselves here. She is no musical genius by any standards. She just happened to have Mr.Shankar tutor her day in and day out. The originality is not there. Like the previous poster said, if you did know anything about Indian classical music, there are far greater musicians who do deserve such attention, however, did not achieve the same success as Mr.Shankar.

I suppose you could do better? So which gharana did YOUR family found? Anyway, he wasn't complaining about Classical musicians being ignored, he was calling into question her validity as a Modern musician. Regardless, read ausrotten9's comment below- he hit the nail on the head.

She is clearly talented, and people pay to see talent. There's your answer.

Really, I serously doubt that she needs any money. If she didn't get any from Dad, with her money, she could surely marry into a very prominent family in India and be set for life. No doubt she is one of the best sitar players in the world today.
