AK's are very reliable in the sense that it will work for a long time after wear and tear, it has good stopping power, and it's cheap. However, it has a relatively low fire rate and mediocre aim, and there are newer versions of AK's on the market. This is probably why the US army uses M4A1's instead of AK's.

Firstly, I'm not American. Secondly, the country doesn't matter. Think about it. If there's some crazy awesome weapon that was made by the Germans, for example, do you think that other countries would stick to their own weapons just because it is home-made? Of course not.
