DuMont Television Network ID
BackSomeone else posted this originally, but his account was closed. An ID for the DuMont Television Network, which operated between 1946-1955. DuMont was the first network home for Ralph Kramden, and it carried the NFL from 1951-1955, but was woefully underfinanced, and done in by regulations and uncooperative shareholders. The core of the DuMont network, stations WABD (NYC) and WTTG (DC) became the core of the Metromedia chain, which in turn became the core of the Fox Network. This ID comes after the end of one of their most remembered shows, Captain Video

Today, it's all reality TV shows, trailer trash getting their 15 minutes of fame on Jerry Springer, modelly types whereever you turn, fluff news (do I have to hear more about Britney Spears' or Lindsay Lohan's latest example of bad behavior?), and clones of good ideas in varying quality. I don't think that imaginative programming is gone for good; there are just boneheaded TV executives looking out for the big bucks only.

I think it has a lot to do with everybody striking because they want to fill their pockets. If the writers and actors would just get their act together, we could be well on our way to having some proper television again someday.

Jackie Gleason had a number of kinescopes from his DuMont days in a storage vault. I believe his "Cavalcade of Stars" was where his "Honeymooners" skits would become the beloved TV series. The series closing credits lists the use of DuMont Electronicam cameras which recorded the broadcast on 35mm film. Shortly afterwards, videotape was perfected, and DuMont Electronicam faded into oblivion.

Fortunately, there were DuMont personalities who were enterprising enough to keep these old kinies and films. Although most of its programming is now ruined, some old Honeymooners, Calvalcade of Stars, Morey Amsterdam (later of The Dick Van Dyke Show), and Fulton J. Sheen programs still exist. They resurface on TV occasionally - in Canada, old Honeymooners are sometimes broadcast on the Comedy Network.

Bishop Sheen's DuMont kinescopes often show up on EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network), and a few are in the hands of collectors and museums. Internet Archive has a few kinescopes available for download, including the only known kinescope of DuMont's game show "Sense and Nonsense", and Alpha Video has several episodes of "Rocky King, Inside Detective" on DVD. The budget was so low that existing offices and hallways at the DuMont offices were used as sets.

Why in heaven's name would anyone dump some irreplaceable pieces of TV history into the river? That's the same as blowing up the Taj Mahal or replacing the Eiffel Tower with some anonymous, ugly heap of concrete and steel. (P. S. NBC still gets heat for destroying some pre-1975 Tonight Show tapes just to free up space in the warehouse - okay...sarcasm intended.)

Beancounters (aka accountants) don't understand or appreciate TV. That's why there is no such thing as "local TV" anymore. Syndicated shows are cheaper than producing local shows in your own studio.

That would be amazing if they re-launched MyNetworkTV to become a new interpretation of DuMont, since MyNetworkTV is AWFUL. lol.

The way I see it, Fox is DuMont, since WTTG and WABD (later WNEW and now WNYW) were bought by Metropolitan Media (later Metromedia) in 1956, and Metromedia was bought by Fox 30 years later.
