Carl Sagan - A thousand years of darkness

Back

Its happened before... Carl contemplates that the "submission to ethnic, religious or national identifications" and the rejection of scientific values will leave us tenuously on the brink of a 2nd (and possibly final) dark age. http://www.carlsagan.com/ User Spiff embedded this clip on Videosift with the following description: - In this excerpt from the final episode of Sagan's 'Cosmos,' he discusses why the momentous discoveries of the ancient world were unable to prevent the dark ages from virtually banishing scientific thought for a millennium, and how the ancient world's greatest repository of knowledge, the great library of Alexandria, met its regrettable end. A sobering statement on what ignorance, apathy and fanaticism can do if left unchallenged. .

Jesus will save us? please... try believing in something that doesn't give you a false sense of hope or importance. Christianity is just an ego trip and a mental safeguard against the most profound questions of life. It provides the ultimate hollow answer. The truth is that the questions themselves are much more powerful than any God.

We have to realize that science is what is enabling mankind to destroy itself! Humanity is important, but in the long-term only through Jesus can we be truly saved. This is why the destruction of the library of Alexandria was not that significant when compared to the grand plan of God.

Fuck... I hate this.. Fuck people... I can't believe so much work was destroyed... those who were there poured their hearts into and devoted their lives to the benefit of this planet and they were wiped out for it. so ungrateful... I'm almost ashamed to be of the same species as those responsible for this and other similar events that have no doubt happened since. blarg

Its very true that most history is made by those with the upper hand rather than the true pioneers So sad.

It seems that ancient religions evolved into western religions by occasionally making concessions to science when proven wrong, occasionally making concessions to governments when proven convenient, and occasionally making concessions to priests when proven profitable. Any similarity to reality is purely coincidental.
