In fact even worse than many ocean seas... salinity in seawater makes it "heavy" which causes ocean waves to become more spread apart and less "peaked" Fresh-water waves are closer together and have a steeper pitch making them more dangerous to vessels given parity of the size of the waves... so pound for pound - the Great Lakes are more treacherous, as is proven by the MANY sunken ships resting on the bottoms of those lakes.

Hanford bay NY ; Lake Erie; 30 miles south of Buffalo; that is where you learn to swim in big water. You learn an appreiciation for the power of the great lakes while body surfing in those 4 foot waves on a windy day Best Times i remember as a kid Thank you Uncle Zeke

The Great Lakes can be just as perilous as any stormy waters of the world's oceans as made clear by the story of the Edmond Fitzgerald. Great song and a somber lessen to be learned.
