Yeah, I totally agree with what ya'll have said here. Joel Grey is fantastic and as is Alan Cumming, both in their own versions of this character. But I think the reason for Alan Cumming's kind of overacting in this was he was nervous. He just doesn't have the same spark he had when he does it alone...but he's still great. /this was such a cool idea.

I love both actors as the Emcee. I like that Alan Cumming doesn't simply copy Joel Gray which would be a pale imitation, but gives an original performance, one that fills what his production needed, where the Emcee was not merely a master of ceremonies, but a member of the madness. I love the way Joel Gray is like an old side show barker, not one of the freaks, but calling you to come and see, pulling you in none the less.

These are totally different versions of Cabaret. The endings are different, too. For Cummings, the ending suggesting him and the club being gassed at a concentration camp would make no sense if he wasn't part of the madness. For Gray, w/o that ending, there's no need for him to take part. That doesn't make one interpretation better than the other.

i love alan cumming . look for the clip of thr threepenny opera thats oln you tube he is briliant in that but i do agree joel gray is so much better then him here . alan cumming seems to be over acting like mad .
