Karen Carpenter - The Drummer

Back

This is a video showcasing Karen Carpenter's undeniable talents as a drummer. For those who aren't aware of Karen's involvement with the drums, let it be known that they were her first passion and came before she began her career as a singer. Karen's drumming can be heard on many tracks on several Carpenters albums. What's also most notable about Karen is that she sang and drummed simultaneously... her singing never hindered her drumming, and vice versa... she never ever hit a sour note or missed a beat. An extremely small amount of people can profess to having such a talent. "She was a 5'4 tornado, pair of drumsticks in her hand". when she's in the green clothes, she's happy to play drums but look she's so skinny, I feel so sorry for her,

It's called 'Piano Picker', written by Randy Edelman and is sung and improvised a bit by Richard Carpenter. This version appears on the 1976 'Live at the Palladium' album.

You are wrong, Richard was just as talented as Karen. Without his arrangements and the stacked vocal harmonies Karen would not be the same.

Let's see, Don Henley of The Eagles, Levon Helm of The Band, I believe even Ringo Starr of the Beatles did it too. It's not easy, you do have to be talented and coordinated.

Let's not forget Phil Collins(post Gabriel era)and Genesis...though he eventually got help via Chester Thompson.
