The American Denial of Global Warming

Back

Polls show that between one-third and one-half of Americans still believe that there is "no solid" evidence of global warming, or that if warming is happening it can be attributed to natural variability. Others believe that scientists are still debating the point. Join scientist and renowned historian Naomi Oreskes as she describes her investigation into the reasons for such widespread mistrust and misunderstanding of scientific consensus and probes the history of organized campaigns designed to create public doubt and confusion about science. A realization is dawning that too much reliance on global supply makes people insecure about food and energy. Having your winter tomatoes shipped from Chile, for example, is falling off to local urban growers. When waste products can be utilized for energy, the savings will be a boon, not a tax. Solar and wind at home can provide independence from the utility company as well as the uncertainty of global supply chain. Most of the cost of gasoline already is tax now. This is a win-win.

Me,an idiot,no I don't think so c02lies. The worlds economy is going into recession and it has absolutely nothing to do with green taxation and everything to do with greed. Money is an illusion, food, water and fuel are the real stuff of value, that puts Oz in a very precarious situation. When your basic commodities for survival begin to diminish money won't mean a thing, except to burn that is.

Of course I was correct c02lies,and of course you would not let any child play with matches. So how do you think children learn about such things, how do they become responsible and gain a full understanding before using matches? I mean, look at the introduction of cfc's into the atmosphere and the consequent effect on the ozone layer,a perfect example of not fully understanding what we were doing BEFORE doing it. Mind you, that's nothing compared to the increase of C02 in the atmosphere.

arryhuk, Are you an idiot? If the economy cant support the extra burden of a C02 tax NO politician will introduce it or if they do it will designed with the economy in mind. No politician in his right mind would willing plunge his country into recession. If you think that the economic climate wont effect the thinking on C02 taxes you are a fool. They're already talking about delaying and weakening it in Australia due to the economic situation. Don't fool your self - money talks BS walks.

Absolutely correct. Would you let your child play with matches? Scientists are renowned for getting things completely WRONG. Many times idiotic solutions to minor or non existent problems have been put into action as suggested by scientists that have completely back fired. Why don't you do a little research into introduced species - its a perfect example of theoretical science going completely WRONG! AGW is not even theory - its an hypothesis void of any empirical evidence.

"(James)Hansen I've known for many years. He's a very good climate scientist, but he's decided to do the politics. I feel that he's doing some cherry-picking of his own. At that point, he's not really being a scientist. At that point, you're being a lawyer. He's being an effective advocate for his side, but in the process of doing that he's no longer a neutral party and he's no longer giving both sides of the issues." -Prof Richard A. Muller,UC Berkeley global warming believer Grist interview

I'm sure you will.
arryhuk (Sunday 12th of October 2008 05:05:21 PM)
I will get back to you tomorrow on that one.

Haven't a clue what you're on about. Are you out on day release?
arryhuk (Sunday 12th of October 2008 04:55:32 PM)
Thanks prunar, but we are talking about the future of our planet. Forget the current global economic crisis, that may cost,if it is resolved,a few trillion, chicken feed compared to the real issue.
