He was a classically trained and Joe made comments on how he was a sloppy player compared to Phil. I totally agree with the comment that they would not have had half the success without his awesome riffs and song-writing abilities. He life was cut way too short but that's the greatness behind music,his legacy will live on forever in his music.......

I caught this tour in July '88 in Vancouver. Having been to many concerts by many bands this was the best, bar none. Both Phil and Steve are/were superb guitarists.The guys in Def Leppard will tell you that their compositions were group efforts. They wouldn't be lying. But Steve was a master composer, responsible for some of this band's most memorable riffs. D.L. would have done well regardless, but they would not have realized the degree of success they did at the time they did without him.

in the vh1 movie they made it seem like phil was the better musician. they did a good job with that film. they really captured trhe mannerisms of the band members. the guy that played rick savage totally nailed it.

In light of the heated debate below i believe Steve Clark was classicly trained and the more talented of the two, Phil Collen is more of a metal guitarist but Clark was the main songwriting talent and it showed with the appaling pop albums Def Leppard brought out in the 90s after his death. But it seems the band are back on form with Songs From The Sparkle Lounge
