it's not really a malfunction. in fact the shoots that hit the Stargate gave it more energy than what it could support. So the other gate was activated to contain the energy left over, sending the Colonel O'neil and the Major Carter in Antartica.

Um cant remember the name of the episode... but its in the first season right towards the end where Jack and Sam accidentaly get sent to the Antartica Stargate after a malfunction or something...feel free to correct me if i am wrong... hope this helps
